An Invitation to Support Dekeling

In Buddhist tradition, teachers depend upon the generosity of the sangha for the needs. Donations are often called dana — the Sanskrit word for generosity. Dana takes the form of anything offered for the support of a teacher, such as food, clothing, medicine, land or shelter.

The Dekeling Community depends on the generosity of the Buddhist community to support its activities. Please consider making a gift; it will be of great benefit. Financial contributions to Dekeling are tax-deductible; our federal tax identification number is 83-1153823.

Donate Online

You can make a secure online donation any time by credit or debit card, by ApplePay or GooglePay, or directly from a bank account by ACH electronic funds transfer. You have the option of making your gift a recurring donation, which will to help Dekeling plan its budget and activities.

Support Teachers Directly

It is Buddhist tradition to offer money, resources, or any form of support directly to a teacher. In old times, people gave offerings of money in small envelopes, shared food from their gardens and so on, putting it directly into the hands of the lama, as people do in many spiritual traditions. Sometimes such a gift is an expression of gratitude for a specific act of service by the teacher, sometimes it is a general wish to support the teacher’s ability to continue their work and practice of benefiting others. A modern addition is that Dekeling teachers have Venmo accounts, enabling electronic transfers.

Support Dekeling by Volunteering

Financial generosity is not the only gift, of course. Dekeling depends on volunteer energy. We encourage anyone who feels s/he has the time and energy to consider helping at our regular practice sessions or special events. If you are interested in exploring volunteer opportunities, contact volunteer@dekeling.community.

Donate Securities

Donors may give appreciated marketable securities rather than cash. This is an attractive method of giving because of substantial tax advantages: Donors can receive a charitable income tax deduction. Donors avoid paying tax on the capital gain of selling the securities. If the securities have been owned for more than one year, donors may claim a tax deduction for the market value of the securities, as opposed to the purchase value of the securities. To make a gift of securities, please contact Dekeling’s Treasurer Sandy Pollock by email.

Planned Giving

Consider how you might leave a legacy extending beyond this lifetime. One method of planned giving is to remember Dekeling in your will or trust. Other options might be annuities, or designating Dekeling as a beneficiary on one of your life insurance policies. You will want to discuss bequest language with your financial advisor or lawyer. If you’d like to leave a legacy gift, donate securities or material gifts of land, art, etc. please contact Dekeling’s Treasurer Sandy Pollock by email.
