STUDY & PRACTICE GROUP: Lojong – Awakening Wisdom and Compassion

Lojong—Tibetan mind-heart training—is a Buddhist practice used for centuries to develop loving kindness and compassion, made popular in this day and age by Pema Chödrön and Chögyam Trungpa and many other esteemed teachers.

In our 2023 study group, we’ll use the book, The Practice of Lojong: Cultivating Compassion through Training the Mind by Traleg Rinpoche, and other optional resources. In this book, Traleg Kyabgon offers a fresh translation of the slogans as well as in-depth commentary of each. After living among and teaching Westerners for over twenty years, his approach is uniquely insightful into the ways that the slogans could be misunderstood or misinterpreted within our culture. Here, he presents a refreshing and clarifying view. Students familiar with lojong may use any of the other texts you are studying, as well or instead.  

This study group will meet EVERY OTHER Thursday evening from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, starting March 9th. The study group will go on till sometime in late winter, 2023. The guiding teacher each week–either George Draffan or Lama Lekshe, or both–will give a teaching on the slogan, and suggestions for how to use the practice in the days between study group meetings. In the next week’s study group meeting (two weeks later),

• students will share what they learned by carrying the practice into daily life, and then
• the teacher will give a brief teaching on the new slogan for the following two weeks.

That format will be used in every class.

As we’ve done before, we’ll engage in this way for about half a year, and then turn our attention to other things, returning to Lojong in 2024. This class is suitable for beginners, but you should possibly take the 2-hour class Introduction to Lojong on February 23rd. Please register in advance for the Introduction class.
