Making a Shelze – a Ritual Art Hands-on Workshop

March 12 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST

$50.00

Tormas are small sculptural ritual offering ‘cakes’ made of flour, salt and oil, and decorated with butter ornaments. The Shelze is a symbolic food offering for both everyday use and in special ceremonies.

In this beginners’ class, we’ll meet face-to-face and make dough, sculpt it into the traditional shape, and decorate it with small ‘butter jewels’. You’ll learn how to cook the dough and get tips for getting the consistency just right. You’ll  also learn the ancient Tibetan method for creating the butter jewels in ice water!

You’ll get an introduction to the practice of making tormas:  what we’re doing in our hearts and minds while we make and offer them, and how they are used in rituals. You’ll learn proper ritual form for making, handling, offering, and disposing of used tormas, too.

Each person will make a torma and will either take it home or offer it here at Dekeling.
